Dr.
Schmelz
Dr.
Joan T. Schmelz received her Ph.D. from Penn State University in Astronomy
in 1987. She then worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center where she
was part of the operations team for the Solar Maximum Mission Satellite.
Her research involves the investigation of the coronal heating problem
as well as the properties and dynamics of the solar atmosphere, Her work
uses spectroscopic and image data in the X-ray and ultraviolet wavelength
ranges obtained from NASA satellites and rockets. She is very interested
in undergraduate physics education, and won the physics department award
for outstanding teaching when she was a graduate student. She has published
42 refereed-journal papers on a variety of astronomical subjects including
stars, galaxies, interstellar matter, and the sun.
